The Board of World Mission serves as the agency that helps to coordinate the North American Moravian response to disasters as they happen around the world. Most recently, we have been responding to the Covid-19 pandemic as it impacts many parts of our Moravian Unity.
With stay-at-home orders and the shutdown of gatherings, congregations have had to adapt to how they go about their mission. To date, we have distributed over $14,000 from our Moravian Disaster Response fund to 62 Moravian congregations and agencies in the Northern and Southern Provinces. These funds have been used to help with expenses related to shifting worship and meetings to online platforms such as Zoom and YouTube. Some congregations have used this aid to provide food for families in their community or to send additional mailings to their members. We have distributed an additional $15,000 to Honduras, Cuba, and Peru to help with food, medical supplies, and other essential items. We are currently processing other requests for aid from other provinces as the pandemic is now beginning to more directly impact our partner Provinces in Central America and the Caribbean.
We ask for your prayers for wisdom as we seek to respond quickly and prudently to this disaster. We also request your prayers for those whose lives have been severely impacted by the pandemic. Your financial support is needed to meet these needs as well as those expected during the 2020 hurricane season.
